Fish Oil Counters the Effects of Air Pollution
A new trial has found evidence that omega-3 supplementation can reduce the harmful effects of air pollution (1). The randomised, controlled trial, soon to be published in Environmental Health Perspectives, found that fish oil supplements can counter the effects of air pollution, helping to protect city dwellers from heart disease. It is widely accepted that the air pollution of city living increases the risk of heart disease. In fact, city centre residents are almost twice as

Citrus Fruit Lowers Risk of Stroke
Back in February I wrote about the link between magnesium intake and reduced risk of stroke. There is a growing amount of research in this area, and a new study has now uncovered new links between a special compound in citrus fruits and a lowered risk of stroke (1). The research, published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart Association, used data provided by almost 70,000 women to find links between diet and stroke risk. Citrus fruits contain special compounds called fl

Can Green Coffee Extract Boost Weight Loss?
I rarely recommend nutritional supplements specifically to boost weight loss, as I prefer to concentrate on encouraging good dietary habits first and foremost. However, a new study on green coffee extract did pique my interest. The study suggests that green coffee extract may be an effective supplement in aiding weight loss (1). This supplement was linked with substantial weight loss, decreased body fat, and a decrease in blood pressure over the short study period. The resear

Vitamin D in Pregnancy Linked to Children's Body Fat
New research has linked levels of body fat in children to the Vitamin D intake of their mothers. It appears that children are more likely to be fatter if their mother had low levels of Vitamin D during pregnancy. The research was conducted by scientists at the Medical Research Council Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit (MRC LEU), University of Southampton. This study looked at the vitamin D status of 977 pregnant women, and then investigated the body composition of their children a

Co-Q10 and Male Fertility
A new study involving 287 infertile men suggests that the nutrient Coenzyme Q10 improves both sperm quality and pregnancy rate. The study, published in the International Urology and Nephrology Journal, assessed men with idiopathic oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (OAT), meaning that the men had unexplained reduced sperm count and reduced sperm quality. The trial measured the effects on pregnancy rate of supplementation with 300mg of CoQ10 twice a day for 12-months. Over the 12-mo
